Sweepstakes winners list: where sponsors post winners and how prizes are taxed

The short version

A sweepstakes winners list is the sponsor's own record of who won, and sponsors publish it as a page, post names after the draw or send it on request. Winners are chosen by random drawing and notified through the channels the rules name, which for HGTV means phone, email, writing or a visit. The IRS says prizes must be included in income, goods and services at fair market value.

Where winners are published, and where they are only requested

A sweepstakes winners list is the sponsor's own record of who won, and it reaches the public in three ways: a page kept on the sponsor's site, names posted after the draw, or a list sent on request. One published set of rules says confirmed winners' names will be posted within approximately 30 days of the applicable draw date. That is a rule about posting, not a statement that any given reader is on the list.

The prize is the point for an entrant, but the list is the public proof that a draw ended with a person. A sponsor that publishes one gives a reader something checkable: a name and a place on a page the sponsor controls. The table sets the routes side by side: a maintained page, a request, direct contact, and an announcement after the draw under a posting rule.

HGTV: the Dream Home draw, the notice and the five-day clock

HGTV sweepstakes winners hear first from the sponsor. The 2026 Dream Home rules select one prospective grand prize winner by random drawing from eligible entries, and they allow contact by phone, email, in writing or through a visit from the sponsor's representatives.

The clock starts at notification. The prospective winner must sign an affidavit of eligibility and release and return it within five days, and if the sponsor cannot reach the prospective winner within five days of the first attempt, the rules allow forfeiture and the selection of an alternate. A winner who reads those lines before the phone rings has one surprise fewer.

What PCH publishes about its winners and who supervises the draw

PCH publishes a recent winners list on its website, and it says its Winners Circle is updated regularly, with more winners added every day. The PCH sweepstakes winners list is the page PCH itself maintains. A PCH sweepstakes winners list by year is a different document, and only PCH can say whether one exists.

PCH says its winner selection is completely random and unbiased, and that its giveaways and the handling of prize numbers are governed by its Official Rules and supervised by the PCH Board of Judges. Those are PCH's statements about its own process, and the rules on the page they point to are what an entrant can hold PCH to.

Xbox promotions: winners lists by email request

Anyone looking for sweepstakes winners Xbox has drawn should read the rules first, because two 2026 Xbox promotions describe a winners list that comes by email on request. The Score More With Xbox: The Perfect Match Sweepstakes allows a request within thirty days after February 16, 2026, and the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase FanFest Ticket Sweepstakes allows one within 30 days of April 22, 2026.

The subject line is part of the request in both sets of rules, so an email without it is a guess. A request window is short and closes on a stated date, which makes the date in the rules the one to write down. Xbox is a Microsoft brand, and the sponsor's rules, not a third-party page, say where the request goes.

Food Network: a winners page, a ten-day draw and a one-month notice

Food Network keeps a Sweepstakes Winners page that lists winners by name and location, and its contest page states that no purchase is necessary to enter or win and that entrants can enter every day. One Food Network sweepstakes, open to legal residents of the 50 United States and D.C. aged 21 or older, named one daily prize winner from each of thirty-one entry periods, each by random drawing.

The timetable in that sweepstakes ran on two clocks. Winners were selected within ten days of the last day of the sweepstakes in a random drawing, and notified within one month by email or, at the sponsor's discretion, by phone or postal mail. A sweepstakes winner email is one channel among three, and a winner who did not respond or accept within five business days forfeited the prize to an alternate winner.

Tax on a prize: the IRS lines, fair market value and the 1099

Taxes on sweepstakes winnings begin with one IRS rule: a prize won in a drawing, a television or radio quiz program or another event must be included in income. Goods or services won as prizes go in at fair market value. The haul is real, and so is the line it takes on an American winner's return.

HGTV sweepstakes taxes fall to the winner under the Dream Home rules: all federal, state and local taxes on the grand prize are the winner's responsibility, and the winner will be issued a 1099 tax form for the prize's actual value. Whether another sponsor issues a 1099 is a question for that sponsor's rules, and a winnings tax bill is separate from any figure a tax calculator returns, since a calculator only works from what the winner types in.

What this page cannot do is say what any one winner owes, and it does not try. A tax professional works from the 1099, the prize's value and the winner's own state.

TX and the mail: a Texas sweepstakes chapter with a narrow reach

Texas sweepstakes law applies only to sweepstakes conducted through the mail, so a TX chapter of that kind does not reach a promotion that runs online alone. The sentence cuts both ways for an entrant: an online-only entry sits outside that chapter, and a promotion with a mailed entry brings it in.

In the USA the legal footing of a sweepstakes fits in a line. One published statement puts it plainly: real sweepstakes are free and winning is by chance. Rules for a contest print the free part as a statement that nothing must be paid, and the chance part as a random drawing, and a promotion that asks for money before a contest entry counts has stopped being what that line describes.

Reddit threads, emailed winner notices and the signs of a fake list

Threads titled “sweepstakes winners reddit” repeat what posters say happened, and nobody has checked it. A winners list on a sponsor's own page is the record; a screenshot in a thread is a story. Has anyone won sweepstakes? Sponsors say so on pages they control: PCH adds winners to its Winners Circle every day, Food Network lists winners by name and location, and Xbox rules describe winners lists by request.

A fake list looks like a real one until it asks for something. A message that says a name is on a winners list and asks for a fee, a card number or a login before it will release a contest prize is not a notice under any of the rules quoted here, and no list, notice or claim makes a win certain.

  • No named sponsor and no link to official rules.
  • A winner notice from an account the sponsor does not run.
  • A demand for money, card details or a login before a contest prize is released.
  • Winners posted with no draw date and no location.

Questions from entrants

Are sweepstakes winnings taxable?

Sweepstakes winnings are taxable: the IRS says a prize won in a drawing, a television or radio quiz program or another event must be included in income. Goods or services won as prizes are counted at fair market value. The sponsor's rules say who reports what, and a tax professional works out the amount.

What taxes do you pay on sweepstakes winnings?

HGTV's Dream Home rules make the grand prize winner responsible for all federal, state and local taxes on the prize. Those are the taxes that fall on a winner in that sweepstakes, and another sponsor's rules state their own version. The sponsor's rules, not this page, set the list.

How are sweepstakes winnings taxed?

Sweepstakes winnings are taxed as income, and a prize in goods or services is counted at its fair market value, according to the IRS. A cash prize is its own value, while a car, a trip or a house needs a value, and the sponsor's rules say how that value is reported.

Do sweepstakes winners get a 1099?

HGTV's Dream Home rules say the grand prize winner will be issued a 1099 tax form for the actual value of the grand prize. Whether another sponsor issues one is stated in that sponsor's own rules, and a prize is income under the IRS rule whether or not a form arrives.

How are HGTV sweepstakes winners notified?

HGTV's Dream Home rules allow notification by phone, email, in writing or through a visit from the sponsor's representatives. The prospective winner must return a signed eligibility affidavit and release within five days, and the rules allow an alternate winner if the sponsor cannot make contact within five days of the first attempt.

Has anyone won sweepstakes?

Sponsors publish winners on pages they control. PCH keeps a recent winners list and a Winners Circle that adds winners every day, and Food Network keeps a Sweepstakes Winners page listing winners by name and location. Xbox rules describe winners lists by email request. A name on a sponsor's page is a record; a claim in a thread is not.

What this guide will not do

This page is not tax advice: a tax professional in your own country gives it, and the IRS lines quoted here say nothing about what any one winner would owe. It cannot confirm that a name is on a winners list, and it never replaces the sponsor's official rules, which decide eligibility, notification and prize terms. No list, notice or claim makes a win certain.

Two sets of rules, and both can bite

A prize contest that counts votes or likes on a social platform sits under two sets of rules. Meta prohibits selling, buying or exchanging engagement such as likes and shares, and Reddit bans accounts, temporarily or permanently, for vote manipulation. Organisers add their own penalties: BET's sweepstakes rules disqualified attempts to cast votes that were exchanged, bought or received by one person from multiple accounts.

The voter the rules describe

Organisers describe an ordinary voter in their rules. Disney's Mousequerade sweepstakes let each entrant vote once and voided votes above that limit from the same person, email address or household, and the BBC Radio 1 Dance Awards treated votes outside the announced hours as invalid. Ordinary participation therefore comes from separate people inside the period; this describes what organisers count and is not a way past what they check.

Sweepstakes law, and the orders we refuse

In the United States, the FTC says real sweepstakes are free and decided by chance, and calls it illegal to ask you to pay or buy something to enter or to increase your odds of winning. That is why no order for votes is taken for a sweepstakes, giveaway or raffle. A contest decided by public vote is a different kind of thing, and whether paying for votes in one is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. Political ballots are refused too.

What a refund can and cannot undo

Votes ordered for a poll or contest that never appear in its count are refunded once the organiser's voting has closed. Timing is the organiser's call: National Geographic did not count likes, shares or other activity before its voting period began, and Sports & Social may end text voting early. A result, a disqualification or a voided vote stays with the organiser.
